SFU Applied Sciences Outreach- InSTEM Youth Intern

This position aims to empower traditionally under-represented groups in science and technology. Instructors will plan and deliver high-quality STEAM programs to Indigenous youth participants by creating a safe and exciting learning space. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Participating in in-person and self-directed training;
  • Preparing lesson plans for programs using the program curriculum provided;

  • Preparing a daily schedule of activities and necessary program materials for activities each day; 

  • Creating an engaging and inclusive learning environment for all students and maximizing their program experience; 

  • Developing 1-2 InSTEAM activities as assigned; 

  • Working collaboratively with co-instructors and supervisors to deliver an effective program;

  • Assisting Instructors with program delivery as assigned and delivering activities as assigned;

  • Participating in debrief and reflection;

  • Working and acting in accordance with the organization’s code of conduct to accurately reflect the values of SFU; 

  • Ensuring all tasks are completed accurately in a timely manner by the deadline set by the supervisor and lead facilitators.

  • Program may provide additional support to assist in 1st job training, such as: Parental/Guardian coaching on supporting youth in their 1st job; Bus fare or other mechanism to assist in punctual attendance.

  • Next step opportunities present a valuable chance for High School Youth Interns to participate in local, regional and perhaps even national networking opportunities. Opportunities could include: Being eligible to apply for future local Instructor openings; Being eligible to apply for jobs elsewhere in the Actua network; Provides exposure to post-secondary mentors.

About the Curriculum

The program curriculum is designed to be interactive, inclusive and caters to various learning styles. The program will allow participants to explore STEAM concepts first-hand and develop an understanding of the interconnected nature of STEAM. The one-week camp will introduce the participants to Body Systems, Biomedical engineering and Digital Skills. Participants will explore interactive activities that demonstrate how our body systems function. They will create models of our various body systems. Participants will explore digital skills and learn how to be cybersmart. The program will also have a focus on Indigenous ways of knowing, and will dispel stereotypes related to STEAM, by highlighting that Indigenous peoples have been using engineering since time immemorial.

What we are looking for:

  • Grade 10 to 12 High School students (must be at least 14 years old).

  • This position specifically engages Indigenous youth. Therefore, preference will be given to candidates who reflect the participants’ backgrounds. 

  • Experience working with children and youth in an education or recreation setting is preferred but not necessary. Babysitting experience is seen as an asset. 

  • Communication skills. 

  • Possess current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification or willing to obtain one before the start date. 

  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check prior to the start date.

  • Excellent team player. Experience playing in a sport or recreation league is seen as an asset.
