About the Organization

SFU Applied Sciences Outreach (with Science AL!VE) strives to engage youth in hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design, Mathematics) programs to build measurable skills and improve self-confidence. Aligned with the SFU Faculty of Applied Sciences’ mandate, we aim to dispel stereotypes in the field of science and engineering and work towards achieving diversity and inclusion. We work to empower those traditionally under-represented groups in STEAM by developing barrier-free programs for girls, at-risk youth, and Indigenous communities.

About the Position

Indigenous STEAM Interns will gain hands-on experience related to facilitating STEAM programs for youth. Our programs aim to empower traditionally under-represented groups in science and engineering.

Instructors will plan and deliver high-quality STEAM workshops and seasonal break camps by creating a safe and exciting learning space. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Reviewing daily schedule of activities and necessary program materials for activities each day; 
  • Reviewing program curriculum in advance of each lesson and be prepared to facilitate the curricular content;
  • Creating an engaging and inclusive learning environment for all students and maximizing their program experience;
  • Assisting instructors with program delivery and delivering activities, as assigned;
  • Developing 1-2 activities, as assigned;
  • Participating in in-person and self-directed training;
  • Working collaboratively with co-instructors, community partners, and supervisors to deliver an effective program;
  • Working and acting in accordance with the organization’s code of conduct to accurately reflect the values of SFU; 
  • Ensuring all tasks are completed accurately in a timely manner by the deadline set by the supervisor and lead instructors.

We have 3 positions available. Based on your availability, you may have the opportunity to attend various program sites as part of after-school programming. Please select which date(s) and location site(s) you are available for. Note: all applicants need to at least be available for the summer camp program at SFU Surrey Engineering Building (10285 University Dr, Surrey, BC V3T 0N1).
