Learning objectives: Lecture 21
Understand and be able to describe how translation initiation depends on a looped complex. I suggest you draw this complex out and practice labeling it.
Understand why the above contributes to translational control
Understand that transcripts can be more or less stable depending on the elements found within
Be able to describe the elements
- AREs
- Response elements (such as the iron response element)
Understand the regulation of alternate splicing and what proteins mediate this
Understand how variation in proteins can be achieved with multiple poly-A sites
For the following mechanisms, understand/describe (to the detail discussed in lecture):
- The sequence features required for the mechanism to take place
- The steps of the mechanism
- The proteins involved at each step
- The outcome(s) of the mechanism
Mechanisms:
- miRNA processing and targeting
- siRNA processing and targeting
For mechanisms as well as the other proteins mentioned in the learning objectives, think about what would happen if you removed their functionality through mutagenesis.
