Project

Two types of projects can be submitted for this course:

  • Software engineering project
  • Research project

Their requirements are different and described in the following.

Software engineering project

For this project, producing a useful and interesting privacy-enhancing technology is the main goal. The project can also be an upgrade to existing technology, adding significant new feature(s). The project will be graded on:

  • Innovativeness of the technology
  • User-friendliness of the implementation
  • Presentation

Three submissions are expected.

  • A short (one-page) project proposal describing your expected work, due on March 17. Whether or not your proposal matches the final work does not matter, but the proposal must contain a finalized project group (1 to 3 people).
  • All relevant code files, as well as a document describing:
    • Major features and achievements, preferably with screenshots;
    • Detailed instructions on how to use the program.

Research project

The main product of the research project should be a short research paper with original and interesting research. The project will be graded on:

  • Originality of research
  • Impact of findings
  • Presentation (inc. class presentation and organization of paper)

Three submissions are expected.

  • A short (one-page) project proposal describing your expected work, due on March 17. Whether or not your proposal matches the final work does not matter, but the proposal must contain a finalized project group (1 to 3 people).
  • An original paper written in the style of a short research paper. Around 6 pages is expected though this is not a strict limit. Use the templates here: https://www.usenix.org/conferences/author-resources/paper-templates
    • A survey paper is not allowed, but an SoK (systematization of knowledge) is allowed, which should contain original research on how different works relate to each other. If you want to know what is expected of an SoK, read SoKs in various conferences (e.g. IEEE S&P, PETS).

The final submission, for either project, is due on 26th April. It should be submitted on CourSys.
