Exercise 9
There is one more critical piece of writing we haven't explored in an exercise: your resumé and cover letter. For this exercise, you will write (or update) your cover letter for a specific job.
Once again, this is partially an exercise in writing for your audience. Your cover letter should be customized for each job, highlighting the aspects of your background that they will be interested in. The audience (HR people, managers, team leads) is looking not only for your interest in the company and position, but also for the key skills in being able to do the job.
Pick a specific job that you might be interested in. (… in the not-too-distant future. Probably CEO jobs are off the table for now.) Some possible sources:
- SFU Co-op Simplicity
- LinkedIn Vancouver tech jobs
- T-Net
- monster.ca. Relevant jobs seem split between engineering and IT categories.
- or just go straight to a company's job page: Mobify, Unbounce, A Thinking Ape, Elastic Path.
Write a cover letter for that job. Possible resources:
- SFU OLC All About Cover Letters
- Writing a cover letter from youth.gc.ca
- Cover Letter Tips from monster.ca
Include a link to (or brief description of) the job you're interested in, so we have the context.
Submitting
Save/export your work as a PDF. Submit the file to the CourSys activity Exercise 9.
