Exercise 7

You might not know this, but there are actually two English-language Wikipedias. There is the main English Wikipedia that you usually use, and the Simple English Wikipedia that uses simplified vocabulary and sentences. It is intended for anybody who finds that helpful: likely children or people learning English.

Because of the simplified vocabulary, articles sometimes have to work around an unusual word and end up quite verbose. They can also be strangely concise because they are trying to simplify the explanation. Both of these have their place, but can make the writing sound unusual.

Find a description of some topic in the Simple English Wikipedia, preferably something computer science related. This can be either part of an article or a complete short article, and should be a few paragraphs long. Rewrite the explanation so it is more concise and generally better written, assuming an audience who can handle academic-level English. [No cheating and looking at the English Wikipedia description of the same topic.]

Find another short description in the main English Wikipedia, again preferably CS-related. Try to rewrite it in a simplified-English style using the simplest vocabulary and sentences you can. [Again, no cheating and going to the Simple English Wikipedia. Do feel free to contribute there if you think what you wrote is worth adding.]
