Exercise 2

In this exercise, we will think a little about writing for our audience.

Part 1: Technical Audience

Write a few paragraphs that explain what an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) is to a programmer. Perhaps think of your target audience as a first- or second-year computer science student who has reasonable programming experience, but has only used simple text editors. Explain what the tool is, and why it might be better than a simple text editor.

Part 2: Non-Technical Audience

Now we will imagine explaining what an IDE is to someone non-technical: a program manager or executive who isn't a (skilled) programmer. This person works in a tech company, so can be assumed to at least know basic programming ideas.

Look back at what you wrote in Part 1. Make a list of a few terms or concepts in your original description that you might not expect this audience to fully understand.

Rewrite your description from part 1 for this audience.

Submitting

Save/export your work (description, list, description) as a PDF. Submit the file to the CourSys activity Exercise 2.
